6 Signs You’ve Found the Best Person for the Job

By Victoria Robertson on September 13, 2018

Hiring an individual for a job opening is a stressful experience, especially when you’re striving to get it right the first time. It’s easy to fill a job with any candidate that walks through the door, but to find the perfect fit, there’s a lot more planning and vigorous interviewing that must take place first.

For this reason, it’s important to note the key factors that could tell you whether or not you are speaking with the right person for the job. So, to help you better identify who that person is, here are six signs you’ve found the best person for the job.

1. They’re Adaptable

Oftentimes, interviewees walk in not knowing what to expect, so their nerves are high. That being said, throwing these individuals a curveball isn’t a bad idea. While you don’t want to push someone too far outside of their comfort zone, an adaptable employee is one that you’ll want on your roster.

For that reason, pay attention to the interviewee’s ability to adapt. If you change things up on them, can they handle it or do they break down? Is there a change in attitude? In a work environment, you’ll have plenty of situations in which an employee will need to adapt, so interviewing for these skills is a great starting point.

2. They’re Honest

Honesty is always the best policy, period. When interviewing someone, you don’t necessarily want the individual that has an answer for everything. Instead, you want the individual that’s giving you the truth. Anybody can make up experiences to fit what they think you want to hear, but a good employee is going to let you know what their limitations are as well as their strengths.

For this reason, again, make sure you are filtering for individuals that tell you the truth. Throw in a trick question or two simply designed to find out whether or not a person is being honest with you. If you have an honest employee, you’ll definitely find yourself ahead of the game.

3. Their Interview Matches Their Resume

More often than not, people doctor their resumes to fit the position they’ve applied to. While it’s certainly a risky gamble, it’s one that too many individuals take. For that reason, it’s important to ensure the person’s interview aligns with the information on their resume.

For one thing, always have that candidate’s resume in front of you during an interview. That way, you can point out specific items and have them speak to them. In addition, pay attention to how well someone can speak to their qualifications. If they stumble around certain information, they may have lied about it, so you can ask follow-up questions to ensure they know what they say they do.

4. They Follow Up

Of course, not all items of a good employee are in your hands. You also have to consider the fact that an employee has to choose you back. For example, just because you like an employee doesn’t mean they will want to work for your company. They still have a decision to make on their end.

A good sign that an employee is interested in your company is if they follow up with you following their interview. Do they reach out to thank you for your time? Did they provide you with references? Did they seem engaged and/or ask questions during their interview? Pay attention to these signs as well when looking for the right fit for the position.

5. They Have a Personality Fit

Personality is a huge factor when it comes to finding the right employee. That being said, your interview shouldn’t be entirely about the qualifications, but it should also be about whether or not the individual in question is a personality fit for the position.

Make sure you are gauging a person’s interest in a position as well as whether or not they will get along well with your team. Personality is huge in a work environment, so it should always be a factor during the interview process.

6. They’re Highly Recommended

Finally, but definitely not least, the person in question should have stellar references. Negative references are always a red flag, and it’s important that you understand the right fit will likely come highly recommended.

So definitely check a person’s references (at least three), and listen to what they have to say. Ask follow-up questions, ask about their personality and ask about their work ethic. Anything pertinent to the position should be asked, so be sure to do that!

Again, a vigorous interview process is difficult on everyone, but becomes far more stressful when the position is higher stakes. It’s always in your best interest to know the signs of a good versus mediocre candidate, and these six signs should help you to better understand who is the right fit for the position in your company.

So pay attention to these signs and proceed with your interviews and, before long, you’ll have the right – no – the best person for the job.

Happy hunting!
